We really give a fuck about Nigerian youth culture and all the threads that make up its fabric; music, entrepreneurship, art, fashion and zeitgeist conversations. As much as we care about Nigerian culture, we are equally as passionate about connecting the community of Nigerians and other Africans both at home and in diaspora. What better way to connect you through music.
Music is a universal language, and as we enjoy all the amazing growth and global spread of music coming out of West Africa, we want to make sure we do our part in curating and sharing the brilliant sonics coming out of our homeland. For your listening pleasure, we’ve created 4 themed playlists to celebrate the genius that is African talent.
The 4 themes; New Gbedu, Give Am Belle, Small Chops and Johnny Just Come (JJC) – are all tasked with putting you onto new dope music, celebrating old gems and highlighting newer talents as we discover them.
Our lead curator Osagie, co-founder & multidimensional creative, hopes you can use these playlists to take the pressure off whoever’s got the aux. With experience as an A&R in Nigeria, trust that you’ll be put on to the finest African tunes.
Let’s reintroduce them to you guys.
“Gbedu” is a Nigerian slang that means party, it is also a nod to the turn up culture that is Lagos. New Gbedu highlights and celebrates the best new sounds coming out of Nigeria and surrounding countries in West Africa. With no short supply of talent, there is always fresh music to be heard, and sometimes newer acts to be discovered.
GIVE AM BELLE
Coined from local Nigerian slang, the phrase means “increase the volume” – often heard right after a banger comes on. It could also mean to “impregnate” someone, which originates from the local Pidgin language in Nigeria. If You may guess where we hope you apply this playlist.
Give Am Belle is combs through the discography of an artist with a larger catalogue. This is a good place to discover gems from your favorites, and understand why these artists have become established household names in the industry. When your jam comes on, give am belle.
This playlist is published monthly, plus we would love to know who’s catalogue you want to uncover, just holla at us in the comments and send us a shout firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll figure it out.
At Nigerian events, small chops are the appetizers before the main course; Our Small Chops playlist highlights newer artists with smaller discographies; musicians that stand out and are on our radar. Small chops is designed to be an easy way to get to know artists.
JJC – Johnny Just Come
Our newest addition to the line-up, JJC, is for acts new to the party and the industry. It’s a playlist to uncover hidden gems from names with a growing presence.
JJC also represents a space where newer artists and producers, or any music lover, can reach out to us.
To be eligible for playlisting all you have to do is follow @yawamagazine on twitter and instagram, and write to us at email@example.com – if we like the music, it gets on the playlist!
